We have had the weirdest and dumbest social media trends this year but this one seems to top all of them.
The hashtag #SunBurnArt is the new twitter tale that’s been mentioned over 6000 times in last six days according to one social media analytics site.
The tag entails images of people giving their body a strategic tan using sunblock or fabric in different designs and shapes across the body. Then the person takes a nice sunbath for the skin to burn to reveal the underneath “sunburn art”.
Experts have raised their concerns about the intensity of the issue and they consider it to be one of the most dangerous social media trends with far-reaching implications. In an interview with Opposing views, The Skin Cancer Foundation has strongly condemned sun tanning and sunburns at any cost. They mentioned that the effects of a sunburn are not only painful but they can also cause a permanent damage to one’s DNA, increase chances of skin cancer and accelerate aging of the skin.
The Foundation in its statement explicitly mentioned how sustaining 5 or more sunburns during youth can increase chances of melanoma by 80 percent. Though the instagrammers are flaunting about their sunburn tattoos, what they might not know is that they are trading off their health for a crazy trend.
Director of education at Melanoma research center, Shelby Moneer, has some deep concerns about this social media trend. She considers the trend to be frightening and highly perpetuating.
What Does The Skin Tan Is Telling Us?
Moneer explains that any change in skin color is a sign that you are damaging your skin cells and convincing others that it’s actually very dangerous is a tough task, especially when people take tanning under beauty standards
What to do?
Experts like Moneer encourage to wear sunscreen all the time. Her strategy is “apply, reapply, and reapply”. Every 1 out of 5 Americans develop skin cancer and this is a strong premonition that Sunscreens should be widely used. One person dies every hour from Melanoma and almost 5 million patients with Melanoma are treated in U.S alone.
Apart from sunscreens she suggested covering full body while going out by using hats, full sleeves shirts, pants etc.
It’s pertinent that we take care of our health in the first place and develop a connoisseur for the right stuff in our lives. Whether its Sun tanning or UV tanning, the consequences are always disastrous. Make sure that you and your kids follow these simple tips to prevent themselves from sunburns
